Representative Teams

Murray porter is appointed Technical Director of Representative teams (TDR). The TDR is responsible for the coordination and compilation of a representative  squad from which teams will emerge from each group (seniors, females, open and youth)

The TDR will:

  1. develop the format for four regional training days (TBC) and determine the criteria by which players will be measured. This will be part of the  feeder system to determine representation (the other part being tournament performance)

  2. be responsible for ensuring that communication and training  of these criteria and the format is provided to the regional coaches

  3. select the representative squad/s and  confirm  representative squad camps

  4. select representative teams and determine the appropriate international tournament/s for each representative team

  5. establish key performance indicators by which the representative team can be monitored, measured and realigned as necessary

The manager will be responsible for:

  • Overseeing communication of progress to PNZ members

  • Overseeing funding of the representative team

  • Overseeing booking and travel and uniform  arrangement for the team

The coach will be responsible for:

  • Setting training programme for the representative team

  • Team preparation

The vision of the TDR is to create a complete team over time; this vision must not be short term.

Tournaments

Trevor Neilson is appointed Technical Director of Tournaments (TDT) already.  This role will expand to include the compilation of a national calendar, which will balance the demands of district and club requirements with the feeder system for representation.

A national standard will be developed for each tournament including:

  • regional championships

  • national championships

  • major competitions (i.e. Anzac Doubles, Auckland Open etc).

For a competition to qualify for the major classification it will have to comply with the national standards.

The TDT will also be responsible for administering the representative squad camps.

Representative squads

The process for developing a representative squad/s will be through a feeder system, thereby allowing equal opportunity to all those interested in reaching squad level.

Feeder system

Step one - Regional training days (4 days, pre- season) will be established where players will be skills tested and measured accordingly. The measurements will be sent, electronically to the TDR for analysis.

Step Two - Inter-regional competition will be the first level of representation. Players will be scored and all scoring will be sent to TDR for analysis.

Step Three – Performance compared to peers, in major tournaments indicated on the national calendar

Step Four – TDR will invite players to attend a representative squad camp.

Squad camp(s)

The format and content of a squad training camp will be developed with the TDR and administered by the TDT. These camps will include skills testing, teamwork, application, and tactical decision making. The TDT will be responsible for appointing a team of helpers for each camp and ensuring that they are appropriately briefed as to their role and responsibility for that camp.

All measurement and information will be forwarded electronically to the TDR for analysis.

Youth Development

The position of Youth Development Officer (YDO) has been created to ensure that we place importance on succession planning.

The age band for this is be 30 and below.

Australia is keen to compete against NZ in this age group and an Australia- vs. New Zealand tournament is scheduled for November 2008  An objective of this tournament is that if all goes well, we include this as a third group for the 2009 Trans Tasman Challenge.
