'Boule Blacks'
off to Essen
Clem Boer, Steve
Lawry, Laurel Priestley.
Jean-Pierre Bedel, Patrick Bon
and Gavin Campbell will make up
NZ’s two teams at this years
World Championships in Essen,
Germany, September 26-29th.
Patrick gamed
selection to replace, late
withdrawal, Tony Christiansen by
virtue of having been in the 3rd
team at the 1995 Nationals.
The general
standard of play has risen
significantly in NZ over the
last year with many having the
opportunity to play against
quality international opposition
at this years Air New Zealand
Open.
The indoor
terrain at the Herne Bay club
has also been an excellent
amenity for the National
representatives to avail
themselves of so we can be
guardedly optimistic regarding
their prospects.
We wish them good
fortune in adding to NZ ‘s
currently modest list of
international successes in
petanque. Chris Priestley and
Berit Boer will be accompanying
the team as coaches and Cam
Calder will once again be NZPA
delegate to the Congress of the
FIPJP which takes place before
the tournament begins.
Topics to be
debated at the Congress include:
-
Who should
bear the costs of teams
participating at a World
Championship - as petanque
grows in popularity across
the globe and more and more
countries send teams to the
World Championships it is
becoming impossible for one
country to bear the expenses
of accommodating each
delegation. As a result
currently no country has
offered to hold the 1997
World Championships.
-
A proposal
will be debated that the
fees paid by each country
should be determined by the
number of licence holders
each country has. A further
proposal is that the more
licence holders a country
has the greater the number
of votes at the FIPJP the
country would get. I expect
debate to be fierce on this
one!
Sponsorship
We have been very
fortunate in obtaining
sponsorship in support of our
National Team from the following
corporates:
-
Air New
Zealand: 6 reduced fare air
tickets for team members
travel to the World
Championships
-
Oscar Eide
Ltd, Wanganui: 3 superb full
length ‘Kiwi Stockman’ Coats
for the National Champions
-
Peugeot: 3
stylish jackets for the NZ
(2) Team.
The NZPA is very
appreciative of this support.
Petanque in the Olympics?
Many of you may
wonder if we want to be there
when one reads of some of the
'sports' that have been pressing
for places. It appears that
petanque is being considered as
a demonstration sport by the
IOC. As yet no final decision
has been received by the FIPJP.
What we do know is that petanque
will be played at the 1997 World
Games in Lahti, Finland, August
8 - 10 1997. Teams to compete
will be determined by results in
the 1996 World Championships.
NZPA AGM
The meeting
elected the following officers
and committee members:
-
President:
Jorg Schulze, Secretary: Cam
Calder, Treasurer: Mick
Sharpe
-
Committee:
Clem Boer, Steve Lawry,
Gavin Campbell, Laurel
Priestley, David Morrison,
Buster Emson
-
Graeme
Millard: Southern North
Island Representative
-
Neville
Mines: South Island
Representative
The President and
Secretary delivered their
reports. Christian Fouquet and
Laurel Pnestley were confirmed
as National Coaches and Cam
Calder as delegate to the FIPJP
Congress in Essen. The meeting
recorded its appreciation of the
huge contribution made by
Founder-President Chris
Priestley and also that of
Treasurer Zac Rees.
Petanque arouses Nationwide
Interest - 1998 Nationals for
Dunedin
The NZPA received
a bid from
Dunedin
to host the 1998 National
Petanque Championships as part
of Dunedin’s 150 Anniversary.
The City Council have guaranteed
an indoor venue of sufficient
size to host the event as well
as elevated seating for
spectators.
Mindful that the
NZPA is a national organisation
we are happy to have the
opportunity to hold the
Nationals in a South Island
venue. The date has yet to be
finalised but will likely be in
Easter 1998 to facilitate travel
for those outside of
Dunedin.
It is hoped that advantageous
fares can be negotiated for
those travelling to the event.
Responding to
suggestions from NZPA members,
including past and present
national representatives, the
committee have decided to trial
the holding of the Nationals
towards the end of the 'season'
rather than the beginning.
Roughly speaking
the present timing of the
Nationals and the Open will swap
from 1998. The NZ team for the
1997 World Championships will be
selected at the Nationals 9-10
November 1996 and the team for
1998 will be chosen from the
finalists in the 1998 Nationals.
