PNZ History

Boules Gazette, Autumn 1995

Past Events

The benign summer has provided us with the opportunity for many a game of petanque. In Auckland, tournaments were held and enjoyed by those who took part at Puhoi, run by Jean Claude Rapon and Hibiscus Coast by Louis Mesnage and the H C Petanque Club.

Cam Calder raised in excess of $400 for the NZPA from tournaments in Devonport and as part of the Manukau Festival of Sport.

Cockle Bay Howick. Buster and Bev Emson and Peter and Rita de Beer had the new terrain at Cockle Bay in excellent condition

The terrain at Kennedy Park has not been finished as yet. The NZPA accordingly has offered the North Shore City Council some financial support towards achieving this end. The North Harbour Masters Games this year accordingly will be held at Victoria Park, Auckland.

Petanque Upper Hutt

Petanque Upper Huff held a tournament over the summer. Congratulations Brian Smith on winning that and Graeme Millard on his election as president.

Air New Zealand Open (Easter Weekend)

Excitement is building towards the Air New Zealand Open Petanque Championship, with confirmed major sponsorship from Peugeot, this will be held Easter Weekend, Saturday and Sunday 15 – 16 April. Teams of two, $10 per person entry fee. Send entries to the Secretary, P O Box 32089, Devonport. Spread the word!

Licences

Entrants must be licenced members of the NZPA. Annual licence fee to 31 March 1996 is $10.00.

Details required for licence: name, address, date of birth, nationality, club. Please also include a passport size photo for the licence. Licences will also enable holders to play in competitions outside of NZ.

FIPJP

Good news. We are officially affiliated to the FIPJP and have been invited to send two teams of 3 to represent New Zealand at the World Championships in Brussels in September.

Spoils of the Open

First prize in the Open will be flights to Queenstown courtesy of Air New Zealand and a weekend at Olivers Restaurant and Lodge, courtesy Fleur Sullivan, in Clyde, beautiful Central Otago, called by some the Tuscany of New Zealand.

Whilst there it is likely the Open Winners will have a Peugeot to cruise around in. Air New Zealand have also commissioned a superb bronze trophy from New Zealand’s pre-eminent sculptor Terry Stringer. This will of course be played for annually. To add to their riches the two winners will also each receive a set of competition boules from sponsors Integrale.

Trophy

On the subject of trophies the runners up in the inaugural NZ National Championships, John Kelly, Andrew Tyson and Cam Calder have donated to the NZPA a simple silver cup made by Mappin and Webb, England in the late 19th Century for award to the runners up in subsequent National Championships.

Peugeot

Further exciting news - Peugeot NZ conducted a promotion prior to Christmas offering an 8 ball leisure set supplied by Cam Calder of ‘Boules to You’ with every new Peugeot sold.

The success of this promotion lead Cam Calder to approach Peugeot on behalf of the NZPA. Discussions are continuing but it is likely that Peugeot will be come involved in promoting the game in communities throughout New Zealand.

They are already major sponsors along with Air New Zealand of the Open Petanque Championship. Additionally and separately from their involvement with the NZPA, Peugeot will be major supporters of the Herne Bay Petanque Club.

New Terain

On this subject - a small group Laurel, Adele, Ned, Zac, Martin, Jorg, Christian, Chris & Cam are working on getting a terrain sorted out, 100 square metres of top soil have been removed and replaced with a similar quantity of lime. Lance Kenney of Better Bobcats choreographed an exquisite dance of maximum effect for minimum effort in levelling the terrain. Chris, Zac and Cam spent hours of fun on a small roller compactor. Work continues - once complete an Open Day will be held probably some time in April.

South of the Bombays

The NZPA is growing, we have members scattered the length of New Zealand.

In a bid to keep in touch with members outside of Auckland we are talking with Christchurch, Upper Hutt and Masterton Clubs with a view to them nominating representatives: 1 from Christchurch, representing at this stage the South Island Region and 1 from Upper Hutt/Masterton, representing the lower half of the North Island, to liaise with the NZPA committee.

It is hoped to meet with these 2 representatives on the weekend of the Air New Zealand Open.

Children’s Event

Anyone with children under 13 interested in playing in the Atomic Junior tournament, Sunday 2 April, please phone Chris.

World Championships

The team will be made up of finalists in the 1994 New Zealand National Championships - the final make up being known when those concerned have assessed their respective business and family commitments. We are determined to ensure we are represented by at least one team.

NZPA moves to 21st Century

The NZPA is retaining Karen Barnett to computerise the membership list, handle the issue of licences, and membership renewals - we know a few members have had their names missed of the mailing list for the newsletter - it is hoped that this arrangement will significantly reduce the chances of this happening as the NZPA continues its exponential growth.

The new format of the newsletter is largely the work of Karen - who almost fell asleep reading the newsletter in the form in which I originally gave it to her. It is envisaged that this newsletter will evolve, mirroring the growth in the NZPA. All feedback welcome, particularly news from the regions.

NZPA Committed

Finally the NZPA remains committed to encourage participation in its Open and National tournaments, accordingly leisure boules are acceptable and will remain accept able at these events.

Cam Calder

Secretary, NZPA
