New Zealand Petanque Association Newsletter, Spring 1994

The Glengarry Mid Winter Tournament attracted almost 180 players. The Victoria Park pitch was half covered with two large marquees in case of rain. Fortunately the sun shone, play proceeded smoothly and was duly recorded by TV3 Sports for their News later that evening.

Keith Barker, committee member and tournament organizer expects NZPA funds to benefit by from $400 - $600. Thank you Keith.

We are close to confirming sponsorship with Glengarry, a large wine company, for the first NZPA National Championships. (Saturday, Nov. 19th, Sunday Nov. 20th, Starting 9.00 am each day.)

The committee remains hopeful of offering the winning team air travel to an overseas tournament perhaps in French Polynesia.

Entry fees will be $ 10 per person, the competition will be for teams of 3. All entrants must be ‘licensed’ i.e. paid up members of the NZPA. This costs $5 and membership will run to 31.3.95.

(It is a requirement of the FIPJP, with whom we are seeking affiliation, for players in tournaments, to be licensed members of their particular association.)

Leisure boules or competition boules will be acceptable in the first NZPA Championship. Overseas competitions will require players to use competition boules.

Entries with payment should be received by the committee by October 21. 1994. Places will be limited, so get your entries in pronto to the NZPA Committee, 121 Ponsonby Road, Ponsonby, Auckland.

Other news

Already plans are in place for improvements to the terrain at Victoria Park, Auckland City. It is envisaged this may include expansion of the pitch itself, provision of park benches on the edge of the terrain and landscaping and planting of trees. These improvements will occur as and when Council funds allow.

North Shore City Council, thanks to the vision of Genevieve Becroft and Glenda Bostwick, are committed to provide terrains at Kennedy Park, Castor Bay - this will be the venue for the North Harbour Masters Game at March 12th, 1995 - and two smaller ones at the North end of Takapuna Beach near the boat-ramp and in the Rose Garden Takapuna, opposite Farmers.

Other cities around New Zealand have responded to suggestions of a public terrain - if you haven’t got a terrain in your area, speak to your local Parks Manager, you may be pleasantly surprised at the positive nature of their response.
