Petanque New Zealand

Boules Gazette, July 1997

Niau is Number One

The first Air New Zealand National Singles Championship was held in Wellington at Easter. Competition was fierce in the tournament, expertly and smoothly run on behalf of the NZPA by Brian Smith, Leon Crosse, Graeme Millard and others of the Wellington Petanque Association. Niau Ruta won 15 - 11 over Evan Green in the final.

New Faces on the NZPA Committee

The NZPA’s AGM was held on Thursday, April 3, 1997 and the following persons were elected to the Committee:

President: Jorg Schulze

Vice President: Noel Hunt

Secretary & Member of the Executive Committee FIPJP Cam Calder

Treasurer: Mick Sharpe

Committee: Gavin Campbell, Christian Fouquet, Steve Lawry, Alan Lethbridge

Wellington Regional Representative: Brian Smith

Auckland Regional Reprsentative: Peter de Beer

South Island Regional Representative: David Direen

Other useful contacts:

As the number of clubs increases in different areas more Regional Associations will form. These will be self funding, often by means of running the Regional Championships and exist to coordinate club activities in the region and promote the game locally. The Regional Secretary acts as a direct conduit to the NZPA Committee.

Secretary attends FIPJP Executive meeting in Nice

Cam Calder attended meeting as a member Executive Committee International Federation. Discussion was intense because of the growth in popularity of the game globally and the consequent rise in numbers of teams wishing to compete at the World Championships it has become increasingly difficult to find covered venues of sufficient size and host countries to meet the costs of staging the event.

A number of strategies were considered and member countries will have input into modification of the existing format of the Championships.

At time of writing, no country has offered to host the 1998 World Championships. It is hoped that the eventual revised format will help make the holding of the World Championships - an occasion allowing members of the greater petanque family to get together - a more achievable goal for a greater number of countries.

Calendar of National Events

In response to feedback from Association Members the NZPA committee decided to hold the National Triples Championship Competition later in the summer. The dates and venues are as follows:

(We are currently awaiting written confirmation that their proposed new terrain will be in place).

Venue: Napier Petanque Club. Contact is: Noel Hunt

Dates: Easter Weekend - April 98.

NZPA Tournament Committee

The NZPA Committee has appointed a Tournament Committee of: Peter De Beer, Christian Fouquet, Noel Hunt

Their responsibility is to organise a format for the three NZPA administrated National Tournaments and to organise and run the tournaments themselves in association with the host region or club. In this way the various events can be held around the country with full NZPA support.

Financial donations to NZPA

The NZPA gratefully acknowledges receipt of financial contributions from the Wellington Petanque Association and the Cockle Bay Petanque Club. The NZPA will make small contributions to the expenses of players to the World Champs and the delegate to the two FIPJP Executive Committee meetings. Herne. Bay Petanque Club Committee has also voted to support its members in the NZ contingent.

Currently, however, representing NZ as a player or a delegate demands a significant financial contribution from an individual. The NZPA Committee is aware of this problem and is committed to improving the situation. We are happy to receive any positive suggestions re funding. It is likely that the present shared responsibility for funding raising between the NZPA, the selected person and their club will continue for the time being. A situation which appears to pertain across many sporting codes.

New Zealand Schools Petanque Association

The New Zealand Schools Petanque Association is an Incorporated Society, affiliated to the NZPA, set up to promote and foster the game of petanque in Primary and Intermediate and High Schools throughout New Zealand.

Already they have held successful regional tournaments in Auckland, Wellington and Nelson. A teacher in service tuition in Petanque Coaching for Teachers in the greater Auckland area will be held Wednesday July 30, 1997, on the Peugeot Terrain, Herne Bay Petanque Club. Registration by July 25, 1997 to Cam Calder.

Letter to the Editor

Cam, I thought you might be interested in the following information. I believe the first Intermediate/Secondary School Petanque challenge took place on March 17 1997, at the Buckland Bowling Club Terrain.

Papakura High School played Pukekohe High School. ‘The Students’ (Triples) Papakura defeated Pukekohe 13 - 7. ‘The Students’ (Doubles) Papakura defeated Pukekohe 13 - 7.

As I belive this is the first inter Secondary School ‘Match’ Papakura are claiming the right to call themselves National Secondary School Petanque Champions. Both Schools are very keen to accept challenges from other Secondary Schools (Students and Staff)

Regional Round Up

Wellington

Greetings folks!! Hey it’s suppose to be winter but in Wellington we seem to be playing more petanque than we do in the summer!!!!

May, saw the start of the WPA Monthly Interclub Triples League. This competition has attracted 22 triples teams from the various clubs in the Wellington Region. It’s a round robin format with each team playing three games per month. The league is due to end in mid November 1997, with the playoffs scheduled for the end of November 1997. Trophies for the winning teams have been provided by Obut.

Since the beginning of this year the WPA has organised a series of encouragement tournaments. These doubles tournaments are designed to attract players who have just started playing petanque and want tournament experience, and also have a chance to make the final. By ensuring the experience players are in the same pools and the other players are spread over the remaining pools, The aim is to produce a final which has an experienced double playing and inexperienced double.

So far the two tournaments we have held, have been an overwhelming success with over 40 doubles registering for each tournament. The third tournament in this series is to be held on Sunday 6th July.

Most of the clubs have also been very active. Khandallah and Kapiti have had training days.

Upper Hutt and Masterton have both held ‘melee’ doubles tournaments. For those of you who are not familiar with ‘melee’ tournaments, it is a tournament where players put their names in a hat, partners are drawn and a format decided by the numbers participating. The emphasis is on encouraging people to participate and enjoy the game of petanque.

Auckland

Auckland Petanque Association: First meeting to initiate the APA was held on the January 21, 1997, at the Epsom Bowling Club. Six Auckland Petanque Clubs were represented as well as the NZPA by the President, Jorg Schulze.

The purpose of the Auckland Petanque Association would be to bring about co-operation between clubs as to dates etc for events to avoid clashes and that the circulation of that and other information would be through the NZPA Newsletter and to members by the individual clubs.

An inaugural championship on Waitangi Day was held which was a great success with many teams taking part. The proceeds of that day was the initial source of funding.

Could we have all clubs involved with the APA suggested tournaments dates for the year 97/98 by August 1, 1997, or no later than August 10, 1997.

Any comments on interciub competitions will be gratefully received as it will be your competition, re: Playtimes - Format - Where played - Scoring - Type of team, etc. etc. Hope to hear from you soon. - Peter de Beer, Representative for the APA

Herne Bay Petanque Club: The election of a new committee in April has seen a flurry of activity at the club. Experienced and new players are welcomed at the club every Friday evening with the new BBQ and a game of Petanque providing an enjoyable way to unwind at the end of the working week.

The Air Calm Winter Series of Nine Tournaments, the majority of them with drawn partners is underway. Individual points are recorded, and the two players with the highest total, (best of five results only being recorded) win a holiday in Noumea courtesy Air Calm and the Herne Bay Petanque Club.

Two very enjoyable interciub days have been held with the Hibiscus Coast Petanque Club for a jointly purchased silver trophy.

After 30 years of supervised neglect the clubhouse has been repainted thanks to Mick Sharpe, Registrar, David Kyle, Tutor and the Students of the Painting and Paperhanging Course, of Auckland Academy East, Ellerslie.

Taranaki

Taranaki Petanque Inc, New Plymouth. (Terrain at the Egmont Hotel Bell Block). The club

meets on Wednesdays, at 1 .00pm. and Sundays, at 11 .00am.

The month of April saw the Annual Club Championships held on Sunday. 6th (singles) & Sunday, 20th (doubles) with Arthur Everett taking out this years singles title and Ivy Everett coming runner up. Arthur & Ivy also gained the Silver at the N.Z. Masters Games at Wanganui in February 1997. The Doubles title was won by Les Hill & Rita Jones, with Adam Bunt and Molly Hammersley a very close 2nd.

The Taranaki Masters Games 1997 are on November 10 and 16, 1997, at Stratford with petanque being played on the terrain in New Plymouth.

The Club has experienced a healthy increase in new membership over the past year due to the higher profile of petanque in New Plymouth, so if you are down our way and want a friendly game or more details, please contact Les Hill.

Dunedin

The Caversham Petanque Club now has a membership of over 60 players, and with the mild winter weather we are still enjoying playing Sunday afternoons, and Tuesday evenings under lights. We recently finished playing Club Championships in singles, doubles and triples, which was a lot of fun, even if the same people kept starring.

A club is now established at Milton and clubs are being organised at Mosgiel and Oamaru so we are looking forward to some challenges this summer.

The local rest homes have shown great interest with quite a few games already played and later in the year they plan to hold their own competition. Local schools have expressed interest also.

We are planning on building a tournament pavilion, but not sure when this will go ahead, finances permitting.

Planning is well underway for the Masters Games in Dunedin in February, 1998. We are hosting the petanque and hoping for entrants from all over the country. This will be a doubles tournament for 30 years and up, play being on Friday February 6 and Saturday February 7, 1998. Entry forms should be out some time in July - more information later.

All visitors to Dunedin are most welcome to come along, either during club sessions, or any time during the week.
