Hawkes Bay Petanque |
|
Napier supports
three well organised clubs that engage in
various interclub competitions and other local
and national tournaments. For the more casual
exponent of the sport what could be more
pleasant than a relaxed afternoon at one of the
many wineries playing a game of petanque while
sampling some of their fine products.
All three clubs are
affiliated to Petanque New Zealand (the national
association). PNZ promotes and organises the
sport. Several National Championships have been
held in Hawkes Bay.
A number of Hawkes
Bay players have represented New Zealand at the
Trans Tasman and world Championships.
Petanque Hawkes Bay
has been to promote petanque and coordinate the
activities of the three clubs. An informal
association, consisting of the Presidents of the
three clubs, it meets as and when the need is
seen by any of the clubs. |

Hawkes Bay Lawn Tennis & Squash Club
Petanque
Higgins Street, Marewa, Napier
|
|
The Hawkes Bay Lawn
Tennis and Squash Club is fundamentally a tennis
and squash club but early in 1999 that changed
when committee member, Kevin Rouse, hatched an
idea to introduce a third sport.
The idea of
introducing the game of petanque arose when
existing club members gathered on Friday
evenings after work to relax, have a drink and
play petanque on the sole piste - laid down some
years earlier by the club's accountants. |
 |
|
So on 24 July 1999
a working bee laid down 5 new pistes and the
third Hawkes Bay petanque was born.
The club day of
Fridays from 6.00pm proves popular for working
people. Meals are available from the restaurant
and drinks are available from a well appointed
bar and lounge.
A second club day
on Saturday afternoons from 2.00pm was decided
on so that it would not compete with the other
two sports. This allows dual club members a
choice of playing either tennis or squash on the
Sunday.
Visitors are
welcome to visit on club days for a small fee of
a gold coin. |

Napier City Petanque Club
Nelson Park, Napier
|
|
The Napier club
operates from its terrain in Nelson Park, Jull
Street, just off Kennedy Road very close to the
city centre. Since forming in 1996 the club has
grown to approximately 36 members, all keen and
of various playing experience and ability.
With its 24 pistes
the club is able to hold quite large events
throughout the year. The annual open event
attracts players from clubs throughout New
Zealand. Hawkes Bay is a popular place to visit
and the tournaments are invariably well
attended.
The terrain has a
good base topped off with a mixture of coarse
crushed lime, crushed shell and a very light
sprinkling of small stones. The surface is a
good test for players from the beginner to the
experienced.
Playing days are
Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday from 1.00pm.
Vsitors are welcome. |
