2007 Annual General Meeting

Chairman's (Acting CEO) Report

While it is customary to have a Chief Executive’s Report, it would be a little harsh to expect Bryan Wells to write a report after only being in the position for two weeks.  Therefore I have prepared this report on the year ended December 2006 in my capacity as Acting CEO for much of that period, and as Chairman of the National Council.

New Zealand Champions 2006

  • National Triples Champions: Seti Mailei, Niau Ruta, Georgio Vakauta

  • National Singles Champion: Brian Smith

  • National Doubles Champions: Seti Mailei, Georgio Vakauta

  • National Senior Doubles Champions: Rex Hayes, Terry Lambert

Congratulations to all the above champions.   Niau Ruta and Brian Smith have joined Georgio Vakauta (2001) as the only players who have won all three National Championships.

Rex Hayes and Terry Lambert made a little bit of history by becoming the inaugural National Senior Champions in December.

International Events

Congratulations to all the players who were selected for representative teams in 2006.

Trans Tasman Challenge

Congratulations to the team for their convincing win over Australia in both the Open and Senior competitions.

Open: Roberta Campbell, Sharon Cannon, Barbara Johnston, Joanne Lippard, Laurel Priestley, Bethne Rouse, Ian Baker, Christian Fouquet, David Lippard, Michael Rocks, Richard Swaney, Dirk Winnie.

Senior: Claire Bradburn, Marie Fenton, Dawn Gardner, Pat Jamieson, Margaret Maher, Jean Parley,   Doug Hay, Rex Hayes, Reed Jamieson, Terry Lambert, Trevor Neilson, Bill Peachey

A big thank you to the Horowhenua Club for hosting an excellent event.  The weather was terrible at times, but the piste remained playable throughout, and the support provided by the club members was exemplary.  A special thank you to Nyra and Geoff Bentley who encouraged TV1 to film play on the Saturday morning for that night’s 6 o’clock News.

Singapore International Petanque Championship

Two triples teams were selected for Singapore this year: Roberta Campbell, Joanne Lippard and Claire Wilson competed as a women’s triple in an Open tournament and qualified for the second round. Andrew Joe, David Lippard and Andre Noel, after a slow start, picked up some wins in the Nations Cup.

World Petanque Championships, Grenoble

For the first time both the Open and Women’s Championships were held at the same time and in the same venue.  This was also the first time that a New Zealand team competed in the Women’s Championship.  If nothing else, Grenoble 2006 proved that a New Zealand Women’s team have the ability to compete at this level.

Women: Sharon Cannon, Barbara Johnston, Laurel Priestley

Open: Ian Baker, Christian Fouquet, Michael Rocks, Dirk Winnie

Oceania Championship and Asian Championship

Unfortunately, there were insufficient players available to make up representative teams to compete at either of these events.

Sponsorship

Peugeot (Sime Darby Automobiles NZ Ltd) and SPARC continue to be our major sponsors.  There is much work that needs to be done in this area and I am aware that Bryan Wells is targeting people to help out.

Coaching and Umpiring

SPARC have provided a one-off grant of $4,500 to help develop the Coaching (now Performance Enhancement) and Umpiring capabilities within our sport.  Neil Goodwin has done a tremendous amount of work in both areas during the year and the results should start bearing fruit over the next year.

Administration

The year provided a number of changes and challenges in terms of the administration of Petanque New Zealand

  • Graeme Morris resigned from the Chief Executive’s position at the Annual General Meeting in March. Graeme was awarded Life Membership by Petanque New Zealand.

  • Bryan Wells was appointed CEO in December.

  • Joanne Lippard was appointed Deputy CEO (Operations Manager) in March and resigned from that position at the end of the year.

  • Neil Goodwin took over the vacant Central Region Delegate position in March.

  • John Leadbeater, Northern Region Delegate, was replaced by Lorraine Brock in November.

Throughout this time, Barbara Whittington and Brian Smith continued to keep the ship afloat, supported by Jean-Pascal Cuer (Canterbury/Tasman Region Delegate) and Ron Thompson (Southern Region Delegate).

Conclusion

The coming year will provide plenty of new challenges and no doubt many of the old ones will be ongoing.

I would like to thank all the administrators for their continued involvement in the sport, and I wish all members a successful year on the piste, whether they be players, coaches or umpires.

Michael Rocks

Council Chairman
