2005 Council Meeting Reports

PNZ Council Meeting 27 & 28 August 2005

Changes in Administration

Murray Porter has resigned as Central Region Delegate and National Council Chair, in order to concentrate on publication of the PNZ magazine.

Trevor Neilson has resigned as Deputy CEO of PNZ. He still wishes to be involved in PNZ organisation and administration, particularly in the areas of senior petanque and umpiring, and intends to apply to be the new Central Region delegate.

All Executive positions, and the Wellington and Canterbury/Marlborough Regional Delegate positions, are up for reappointment next year  (Auckland, Central and Southern regions have had new delegates this year). Expressions of interest for these positions will be called for shortly.

Members Survey

A survey of members is to be conducted. Michael Rocks of Wellington is co-ordinating this. Look out for it to have your chance to have your say in PNZ’s future direction and activities.

Selectors

A new selection panel has been appointed – Michael Emerson, Elizabeth Rocks, Brian Smith. They are drafting selection processes, policies and criteria, which will be released shortly.

Participation in international tournaments

The following policy applies to international tournaments for which PNZ receives invitations to compete, i.e. at which teams attending will be official NZ representative teams. It does not apply to general invitations to Open tournaments that anyone may participate in.

  • An invitation to be considered for selection will be sent to the people in the national selection squad(s) who meet the entry criteria (if any – e.g. age, gender)

  • The PNZ Selectors will choose the team

  • Participation will be at the competitor’s expense

  • PNZ will assist with funds and/or fundraising at its discretion

Trans Tasman Challenge

To be held over ANZAC Weekend in 2006 (Saturday 22nd April – Tuesday 25th). Venue yet to be decided. Expressions of interest in hosting the event are to be called for. Clubs wishing to apply will need to meet the Tournament Protocols (available on website and will accompany invitation). The teams will consist of equal numbers of men and women. There will again be a Senior’s Challenge held in conjunction with the open event.

Resources for Clubs

An information pack, consisting of brochures on Introduction to Petanque, How to Play, How to Run a Tournament, Official Rules, PNZ Constitution, and a promotional poster, is to be distributed free of charge to each affiliated Club. Additional copies will be available at a small charge, to cover copying and postage.

Affiliation fees

It was agreed to propose at the next AGM that the affiliation fee be increased to $10 per person. This would take effect for the 2007 year. The major reason is to secure the funding of the organisation, rather than relying on ad hoc outside sources.

Timing of National Championships

The following changes will take effect from 2006:

  • National Singles: second weekend of October

  • National Doubles: second weekend in November

  • The Nationals Triples remain at the first weekend in April

The main reasons for the change are:

  • To recognise the emergence of a petanque “season”, that generally runs from October to March;

  • The advantages in terms of the availability and cost of accommodation and travel of moving away from public holiday weekends;

  • The Singles will now be held during NZ Summertime (daylight saving);

  • Congestion around the August/September period with World Championships and other increasingly important international tournaments.

Blog site

Now that the website is operating again, it has been decided to try using the blog site more as a “Chat Room” and Noticeboard, where petanque people can express their ideas, put issues up for discussion and debate (in between writing to the magazine Editor!), or just seek information, maybe buy or sell petanque gear. Look out for a few thought-provoking topics coming your way, and have your say (comments will have to be attributed – no anonymity).
