2000 Annual General Meeting

President's Report

I hope you have all enjoyed your Petanque games over the last year. It is with pleasure that I report on the NZPA Committee’s activities over this period. After the last AGM a number of issues were highlighted by the committee as being important to address.

The first was the Financial Year. So that full reports could be made to the AGM at Easter the Financial Year will from this year on, run to December 31. It was also apparent that the current constitution was not adequate for a growing national sporting body. The long term aim of the NZ Petanque Association is to promote the formation of five regional associations, each with a number of member clubs.

The voting structure of the NZPA could then change from individual membership and voting rights, to club membership and voting. Unfortunately it is not possible to introduce this structure now, as an incorporated society such as ours cannot have unincorporated clubs as members. Most petanque clubs in New Zealand are currently unincorporated.

Diane Findlay and Ivan Hansen have both put a lot of work into the new constitution. The constitution that we put to this AGM is a set of Rules that remedies deficiencies in the current constitution. It also ensures better regional representation on the NZPA committee. It could be viewed as an interim constitution until we are able to meet the criteria for our long term goal of club membership.

Many thanks to all our members around the country who helped with our major fundraising raffle. This raised over $6000 which the association used for overseas teams competitions and training.

I’m sure you would all agree that Brenda Dykes has done a great job as editor of the newsletter/magazine ‘Petanque New Zealand’. It is a bonus for our members to get a newsletter of such quality, with news of petanque around the country and overseas.

Brian Smith has assisted us by compiling tournament results into national and regional players’ seeding. This seeding assists tournament organizers to prepare their tournament seeding. It will also help the committee selecting teams to go to the Oceania Championships hosted by Tahiti in October 2000 and for the Women’s World Champs in France.

Our national tournaments have once again been a success with the Christchurch Club hosting the Singles and the Wellington Petanque Association the Doubles. The committee has also

agreed on future National tournaments well in advance, with Wellington hosting the Singles in October, Christchurch the Doubles in November and Rotorua the Triples in Easter 2001.

I hope the incoming committee continues this trend, and if your club or region would like to host a national tournament, you should put your expression of interest to the new committee as soon as possible.

Finally I’d like to thank the Hillary Commission for their support over the last year, and also our major tournament sponsor Peugeot. The NZPA looks forward to continuing working with you.

Christian Fouquet

President
